Easy Way to Make Nut Milk

Making Nut Milk
Making nut milk at home does not have take up a lot of your time. It requires that you prepare for it in advance by soaking the nuts, but the actual work is not much and can be done in a few minutes. The benefits of making nut milk is that you can enjoy a good clean milk without any harmful food additives and other unnatural substances.
Although most nuts, such as almonds and cashews, are generally expensive, making nut milk from them is actually cheaper than purchasing organic milk at the grocery store. But it gets even better. In addition to the nut milk, you also get the pulp, from which you can make all kinds of dehydrated and baked treats.
Another good thing about making your own nut milk is that you do not need any fancy equipment to make the milk. All you really need is a blender and a strainer to separate the pulp from the nut milk.
For a strainer, you can use a nut milk bag, which can be purchased online as well as at some health food stores. The downfall of using a nut milk bag is that it is quite expensive. A cheaper alternative is to use a paint strainer, which you can purchase from your local paint store. The only thing with a paint strainer is that it is made from nylon, whereas a nut milk bag is usually made from natural cotton. Other than that they work about the same.
How to Make the Nut Milk
To make the nut milk you will have to soak your nuts for at least 4 to 8 hours. You can soak them longer, but 4 to 8 hours is enough to release the enzymes. The key here is to use fresh clean water because you don’t want the nuts to absorb any dirt or chemicals.
Once the nuts have soaked, you will need to rinse them off before blending them up with fresh water.
The ratio for making nut milk is 1 part nuts to 2 to 4 parts water depending on how thick you want the milk. If you want to use the milk just for drinking, you can add up to 4 parts water or more if you like. But if you want to use the milk to make yogurt, then you would only add about 2 parts water to 1 part nuts.
Once you have blended the soaked nuts with fresh water, simply strain the mixture through a straining bag and enjoy. The pulp can be used to make dehydrated breads, cookies and other raw food treats.
What Nuts to Use
You can use just about any kind of nut or seed to make the milk. Each type of nut or seed will result in a slightly different flavor, but the steps in general are the same. A couple of the most popular nuts are almonds and cashews. Almonds are my personal favorite because the milk is inexpensive and tastes great with a dash of vanilla and cinnamon and a natural sweetener. You can experiment with different nuts and seeds to find out what you like best.
How To Use Nut Milk
Although the nutritional value of nut milk is much different, it nevertheless can be used in a similar manner as any other milk that you can get at the grocery store. You can drink it on its own, or you can add vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne, cumin, honey and many other natural ingredients to create tasty milk drinks. You can also use it to make milkshakes and smoothies, or add it to your morning coffee and tea. If you cook a lot, you can also add it to your soups for a nice creamy texture.

Pretty Sunflower, I'm glad you like the idea of making your own milk. It is not the same as cows milk, but it is a great substitute. Hope you will like it.
I take it you use raw nuts or seeds. I would like to try this but want to make sure that you use raw and not roasted nuts and seeds. I also thought about mixing seeds and nuts to make milk, is this a good idea?
Super info with directions for making nut milks. Thanks!
@healthywholefoods, Yes you would use raw nuts and seeds. And you can mix them as you like in order to create unique flavors. There are no rules, as long as you like the milk.
